An Emerging Vanguard

For women interested in some sort of leadership role in the world of mainstream midcentury evangelicalism, this kind of arrangement became the main option. Christian education, in other words, often functioned as a safe way for evangelical organizations to reconcile a long-standing tension in fundamentalist and evangelical circles. According to most midcentury evangelical leaders, women should neither be ordained nor serve in positions of leadership over men. But without women leading classes and Bible studies in churches, Sunday schools, independent Bible colleges, and pretty much anywhere that twentieth-century evangelicals gathered, there would not have been very many classes. By the 1950s, the unofficial evangelical position on the matter was more or less decided by default: women could not preach, but in certain circumstances, they could teach. But by the 1960s, some evangelical women (and a few evangelical men) were beginning to wonder whether evangelicalism was needlessly stifling the gifts of the women in its midst.
